Many people shy away from advertising because of financial reasons But there are many ways to advertise without spending a dime

Many people shy away from advertising because of financial reasons. But there are many ways to advertise without spending a dime.

Why Advertise?

If you own your own business, and you want it to grow (and as a business owner, hopefully you do!) there’s no way around advertising. Let’s face it. People aren’t going to come knocking on your door asking if you have a product or a service to sell. It is essential that you widely spread the word about your business and what you have to offer. And the good news is you don’t have to break the bank to do it!

When should I Advertise?

That’s easy – all the time! Because your business is a huge part of your life, and you probably devote several hours a day to your work, it should be something you talk about frequently. And whether you realize it or not, simply talking about your business is advertising.

Don’t be afraid to mention your business to friends, your children’s parents, teachers, moms in your child’s playgroup, or strangers in the grocery store. Because you never know where or when you’ll find an enthusiastic and potentially exceptional customer, it’s a good idea to keep your eyes and ears open at all times and constantly look for opportunities to advertise what you do. This doesn’t mean you have to be obnoxious about it. Gracefully bring up your work without shoving it down their throats.

Where should I network?

Don’t know where to start? Here are a few suggestions:

• Links. Start by adding a signature with links to your website or blog to all of the emails you send out. Most email programs have an “options” link where you can add a customized signature which is then automatically added to your emails. Also add signature links to any message boards or groups you belong to. You’d be surprised at how many people click on those links at the bottom of their email messages simply out of curiosity.

• Forums. If you google “work at home” or anything similar, you will be provided with literally hundreds (even thousands) of links to Wahm or business forums where others just like you are either looking for business opportunities or advertising the business they already have. Either way, you will meet many people who may very likely be interested in what you have to offer. Plus, you’ll pick up ideas on other places to advertise and may also gain valuable advice on increasing your business. Just remember, you’ll need to set aside regular time to spend on these forums in order to continue getting your name out there.

• Groups. In joining Yahoo or other groups, you will be able to post (and receive) messages that specifically focus on the areas you want. Join groups that include people more apt to have an interest in the products you sell. If you offer toys or educational books, for example, joining a group of moms would be wise. If you sell kitchen products, join a recipe exchanging group.

• Anywhere. Business cards are essential. Pass one along to everyone you meet, even if you are hoping to connect on a personal level, such as with another mom at school to set up a play date. It’s an easy way to give out your phone number while at the same time letting the card do the talking when you’re not comfortable doing it yourself. Also consider bumper stickers, window clings, tote bags or buttons to pin to your handbag. Although there is a minimal cost for business cards and other items, they regularly serve to start up conversation and draw customers to you.

Be on the lookout for all sorts of ways to advertise your business. Especially in today’s electronic world, the opportunities to spread the word about what you do are endless.
